Basement Cracks, What do they tell us??
Basement cracks happen. Period. Sometimes the cracks are merely shrinkage and “settling” and sometimes they are the indication of a hidden flaw in the structure. So, how do you, as a consumer, know the difference?
Well the short answer is you don’t. And, why would you? Do you have experience in your work or personal life looking at and analyzing cracks? Do you hold a degree in Engineering and have studied sheer, vertical and lateral forces on a homes foundation?
Homes foundation cracks tell a story, if you know the language.
Horizontal Cracks
Horizontal cracks on a basement vertical wall are a story of gloom. OK maybe not gloom but certainly concern. Horizontal cracks mean the soil on the exterior of the home is shoving against the foundation wall and causing it to buckle. If left unchecked and with enough time this can cause a foundation wall to fail. . The first sign of failing is leaking. So it will give you, in most cases, time to pay attention to it and repair it.
Vertical Cracks
Vertical cracking is similar to horizontal cracking but for different reasons. The takeaway is, basement cracks are not to be ignored.
